I was visiting a friend the other day, and on my way out of their building I spotted a rat hanging out on a wall. I initially thought it was dead, since it was daytime and didn’t look like a good hiding spot. But as I passed by, it’s tail moved. I stopped and stared at it for a second. It’s shiny black eyes stared back, but it didn’t move. It’s breathing was slow and shallow. I assumed it must have been sick.

I wasn’t going to try and touch, or move it, and risk getting bitten. I didn’t know what to do, so I just stepped back and went on my way.

But… I still feel really bad for it. Rats are pretty bright creatures. I’d imagine someone else seeing it and screaming, or trying to kill it.  Or would that be a more humane option? It didn’t seem to be okay, and it was an easy target for a stray cat or bird to catch it. I dunno.

Welp, it’s late. Time for bed.
